"Oberheim (Voices): A Chronicle of War" by Christopher Leadem is a science fiction narrative written in the early 21st century. The story unfolds in a distant future, specifically in the International Year of 2410, presenting a universe where conflict and survival are central themes. The initial focus centers on Elonna and her husband Eric, who are navigating the perils of an alien landscape during a time of war, touching upon themes of
loss, survival, and resistance amid a backdrop of destruction. The opening of the novel introduces a tense and foreboding atmosphere as the couple, Eric and Elonna, witness an impending attack from an aerial assault. Despite Eric’s attempts to protect Elonna, he is struck down, forcing her into an immediate struggle for survival as she flees into the wilderness. The narrative quickly shifts to her desperate efforts to find refuge and respond to her husband's death, ultimately leading her to an enigmatic, camouflaged man named Lawrence. Their subsequent interactions blend survival tactics amidst unfolding dangers and philosophical discussions about the brutal reality of their world, revealing the complexities of human emotion in a harrowing landscape.
