"A Supplement to A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents" is a documentary collection published in 1917. This supplement expands upon an eleven-volume series that gathered proclamations, special messages, and inaugural speeches from U.S. presidents spanning 1787 to 1902. The original compilation, copyrighted by Tennessee Representative James D. Richardson, sparked the Richardson Affair—a political controversy over privatizing public documents that ultimately led to prohibiting copyright of federal government works.
The supplement provides in-depth coverage of individual presidencies, preserving the official words of America's leaders. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
